Emotional stress can interfere with your everyday life.  It can cause intensity and negativity. Worry, fear, anxiety, frustration or sadness are examples of emotional stress. Sound familiar?

If so, we can discuss ways to be more self-aware of your emotions and deal with them as they become distressing through stress management.

Identifying your triggers early on so that they do not become chronic and increasing your anxiety or depression is key to becoming more mentally and physically well.

Identifying Your Emotional Stress Triggers

Overcoming Negative Self-Talk and Building Resilience

Have you ever felt overwhelmed when asked to complete a simple task? Did your negative self-talk may get in the way?  You may feel insecure that you may complete the task incorrectly. The feeling of not being good enough, low self-esteem or a feeling of incompetence/inadequacy may cause emotional distress.

Negative self-talk will invade your thought process and keep you feeling overwhelmed. This may be related to situations that you have had in the past where you may have been criticized or ridiculed by others. If you have felt incapable this may also be contributing to your negative self-talk. This belief has formed from an experience.  It is important to remind yourself that this is a different moment in time and that this task can be completed. Challenging and changing your mind-set with CBT skills will help improve your mental well-being.

Quality Sleep and Mindfulness Practices

Emotional stress can also disrupt your sleep. This could lead to a sleeping disorder – insomnia. If you’ve had something weighing on your mind and tossed and turned for hours, you know how emotional stress can impact your sleep quality and quantity.

For example, overwhelming thoughts of what happened during the day, what you need to do tomorrow and what you could have said differently may be causing you from not being able to relax and sleep. By replaying all of the thoughts in your mind, you are overthinking and overprocessing. Mindfulness is one important practice you can incorporate before sleep in order to be able to put those thoughts to rest!

Managing Overwhelm and Prioritizing Responsibilities

Emotional stress can also be present when you are feeling overwhelmed. When you feel that you are unable to manage your responsibilities, you can spiral into increased emotional stress. It is important to remember that you can move through your responsibilities by prioritizing, making lists and managing one task at a time. Staying present and focused will provide you with the ability to get tasks completed with less emotional distress.  Once you can see that you have managed the responsibilities, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and relief.

Stress management can improve your ability to recognize your emotions and understand why you react the way you do. You are more able to understand the impact these emotions have on you and others.

Identifying Emotional Triggers

The importance of recognizing and identifying triggers that affect emotional stress can mean the difference from falling into a pattern of negativity and self-doubt or a good mental health state. To find this out earlier is better!
